Après avoir exposé cette année à la Carmichael Gallery à Los Angeles ainsi qu’à la Bricklane Gallery à Londres, les Barcelonais Btoy ont leur première exposition solo parisienne. Les pochoirs d’Andrea Michaelsson s’inspirant des icônes féminines des années 50 répondent aux illustrations de son compagnon Ilia Mayer qui nous transporte dans un univers dont on ne sait si il est féerique ou démoniaque.

La Galerie Itinerrance existe dans le 13e arrondissement depuis 2004. A deux pas de la Grande Bibliothèque et des Frigos, elle s’insère dans un tissu urbain en pleine expansion économique et culturelle.

S’associant à Samantha Longhi de Stencil History X pour sa programmation, la Galerie Itinerrance se positionne désormais dans le domaine du street art exclusivement et du pochoir en particulier. Btoy ouvre une saison 2009-2010 internationale qui verra le passage de grandes figures telles que le belge Roa, l’américain Logan Hicks, les italiens Sten & Lex, le polonais M-City, ou le français C215, qui ont fait le tour du monde, tant dans les rues que dans les galeries.


ANDREA MICHAELSSON

Andrea Michaelsson est la partie féminine du duo Btoy. Andrea s’intéresse à l’image de la femme dans le temps, à diverses époques. Ses compositions picturales sont faites d’éclaboussures de couleurs donnant vie aux modèles du passé, notamment de l’univers rétro hollywoodien des années 20 aux années 50 telles que Judy Garland jouant la Dorothée du Magicien d’Oz ou Elisabeth Taylor dans le rôle de Cléopâtre.
Pratiquant le pochoir depuis 2001, Andrea a affirmé sa place aujourd’hui au sein de la scène internationale. Elle a ainsi été invitée par Banksy au Cans Festival en 2008, aux côtés de cinquante des meilleurs artistes pochoiristes du monde. On a également pu découvrir son travail en France à l’occasion du festival international de graffiti Kosmopolite à Bagnolet en juin 2008.

ILIA MAYER

Ilia Mayer est la partie masculine du duo Btoy. Il développe dans son oeuvre picturale une vision personnelle de l’individu et sa relation à la nature, qui pourrait évoquer les films de Miyazaki tels que Princesse Mononoke, ou l’univers des bandes dessinées de Shigeru Mizuki avec les croyances et légendes populaires japonaises. Son style allie de fines lignes graphiques et une palette claire, travaillant à la fois le poscal et l’aquarelle.
En 2008, suite au Cans Festival, la structure initialement créée par Banksy nommée “Pictures on Walls” édite plusieurs sérigraphies à partir du travail d’Ilia et commence à présenter son travail au sein d’expositions collectives.
Ilia pousse la créativité à travers la pratique parallèle de la musique électronique expérimentale, ce qui donne lieu à des performances faisant fusionner les sens.

Reportes de inexplicables explosiones sónicas frente al agua. Lagos que gritan como cañones. Cuando la naturaleza se comunica de modo inesperado, los objetos a su alrededor se tambalean. Las comunidades nativas americanas Haudenosaunee, interpretaban estos gritos provenientes del lago como El Gran Espíritu continuando su labor de dar forma a la tierra. El vínculo entre los elementos y la espiritualidad, resulta en metáforas muchas veces más válidas que el vacío que provoca el saberse ignorante ante los misterios de la naturaleza.

Ilia Mayer, artista Barcelonés miembro del Colectivo Btoy, presenta su primera exposición en solitario en miscelänea, partiendo de una personal visión del individuo y su relación con la naturaleza.

La plantilla o stencil es una técnica de reproducción y estampación que ofrece varias posibilidades de expresión artística.
En este taller trabajaremos la plantilla con la técnica manual de corte con acetato, utilizando imágenes fotográficas y tipográficas, que previamente trataremos en Photoshop, y que estamparemos con spray sobre papel o madera.

Andrea Michaelsson (Btoy) empezó a pintar en las calles de  Barcelona.
Sus trabajos, creados normalmente con la técnica del stencil o serigrafía,  giran alrededor de la suerte, el destino y aquella sensación inaudita de desafiar el orden establecido.El pasado año participó en The Cans Festival (Londres) organizado por Banksy.Ha publicado sus trabajos en Pictures On Walls, Rojo o Belio. También ha preparado exposiciones en Los Angeles, Londres, Barcelona y Bruselas, entre otros.

Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art is proud to present Lifeline, a group exhibition featuring work by Alex Hornest, Ilia of Btoy, Jim Darling, and Sesper. Artwork featured in the exhibition will include watercolor on paper, oil and acrylic on wood, acrylic on canvas, and mixed media collage. A preview reception for the exhibition will be held on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 from 7.00pm – 10.00pm. The exhibition will be open for viewing through Thursday, February 26th ’09 from 1.00pm – 7.00pm.

About the Artists:

Alex Hornest
Painter, sculptor and mixed media artist from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Alex Hornest employs a diverse range of materials in his work to explore the urban, recreational and inner lives of the people around him.  He draws inspiration from the complex relationship between cities and their inhabitants and seeks to capture the essence of human beings and what moves them in the midst of chaos, unrest and routine. 
Alex has exhibited his work in group and solo exhibitions throughout Brazil and the major cities of the US, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Miami.

Ilia of Btoy
To gaze at a piece by Ilia is to enter into a magical universe populated by acid-house warriors and chic lost souls.  Set against stark retro landscapes, the artist’s muted palette and delicate lines enhance the turbulence captured within their striking, moody faces.
Ilia is one half of Barcelona duo Btoy. For years, Btoy have been adding life to the influential Catalan street art scene, and more recently into a grimy tunnel at the first Cans Festival in London.

Jim Darling
Shape, composition and emotion play a large role in the work of American artist Jim Darling. “I attempt to take complex ideas and scenarios and boil them down to a more subtle subject matter,” he comments. “I then juxtapose this simplicity with intricate details. I try not to spell out the entire story, but rather set a tone and deliver elements for a scene. My hope and goal is that the viewer can feel that tone and build the story with the elements that I've constructed.”
After a childhood in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas, Jim moved to Denver to study design. Four years ago, he moved to Los Angeles where he worked as an Art Director, Illustrator, and Fine Artist. He is currently traveling the country with his wife, making art and looking for the next city to call home.

Sesper
Brazilian artist Alexandre “Sesper” Cruz spent his adolescence absorbed in music and skateboarding – building ramps, making fanzines that documented the Sao Paulo art scene, and recording k-7 compilations.  These interests influenced the sticker and paste up poster campaigns he launched around the city in 1999.
Sesper is best known for his unique mixed media artwork.  He uses recycled material such as paper, cardboard and wood as his surface and paints over these with oil pastel and latex, incorporating layer upon layer of texture and color.
A member of the renowned Brazilian art collective, the Famiglia Baglione, Sesper has participated in and filmed many of their live painting and gallery installations around Brazil.

Discontinu Records y Reboot comienzan a colaborar desde primavera de 2008 con el proyecto “Siamese Serie”, del que surge el nuevo sello Disboot, enfocado a los estilos urbanos de Dubstep,  D’n’B, Grime y derivados, y se consolida  como sello discográfico y netlabel con la edición del primer CD recopilatorio “Lost &amp; Found”. Esta referencia sale a la luz en diciembre de 2008 y será presentado en varias ciudades a lo largo de 2009. Artistas con residencia total o parcial en Barcelona de la talla de DJ Rupture, Filastine o Ed Devane participan con nuevos talentos de la escena barcelonesa de dubstep como Cauto, Manintheattic, Uxuka*, D-Fried, Amph, Backstab o Btoy.

Stencil History X es un libro de investigación sobre el stencil que recoge entrevistas y portafolios de unos 40 artistas. El libro nace en Paris ciudad que en los 80, en la època de la muerte del punk-rock y el advenimiento del Hip-Hop, vio nacer y crecer el movimiento de plantilleros por sus calles.
